AVIAN SIGHTING - Colony of Oriental Pied Hornbill

In the early morning in the month of April 2014, I have the birderlicious sighting of a congregation of OPHs in Lanchang  turn-off before the Toll. They were sitting on perched high on the flood light pylon. There were as many as 10 birds

Upon seeing my car stopped and my camera; they started to fly over me to the nearest tree from my car which was as close as 20 meter from the road. They were eying me curiously all the time. A pair of Black-naped Orioles was harrassing them whilst another colony of 3 pairs of Pink-necked Pigeon kept their distance from them. 

I was wondering who are the celebritiy ......me or them. Well I think it  was mutual then. 

AVIAN FIELD REPORT - APRIL 2014 Awana Genting circa 800m asl April

Hill-blue flycatcher

Its been awhile since I bird in Awana Genting. Waking up late on Sunday in the first week  of April 2014 I decided to drive up to Genting which is less than half the distance to Rengit. Did not expect much maybe hoping to see some migrant flycatcher like Mugimaki and White morph Asian Paradise.......

 The usual common birds of the highlands I managed to photograph here are as follows:-

Red-bearded barbet

White-breasted Yuhina

Scarlet minivet

Little spiderhunter

Woodshrike

Crimson Flowerpecker (female)

Crimson Flowerpecker (male)

Migrant Raptor ? -  Anyone can ID please

AVIAN NESTING 1/100 - White-rumped Sharma

The White-rumped Shama are shy somewhat  but very territorial. The territories include a male and female during the breeding season with the males defending the territory averaging 0.09 ha in size, but each sex may have different territories when they are not breeding. 

It is in the months of April to June that you can find the female laying a clutch of four or five eggs in a nest placed in the hollow of tree. During courtship, males pursue the female, alight above the female, give a shrill call, and then flick and fan out their tail feathers. This is followed by a rising and falling flight pattern by both sexes. If the male is unsuccessful, the female will threaten the male, gesturing with the mouth open.

This is a first time for me  photographing  its nesting. Pic1 showing the female preparing the nest in a hollow  about 30 ft high from the ground in Rengit Pahang. I cannot approach closer because the tree was in  a swamp patch. The male apparently do nothing but just stands guard. The female will gather, leaves, ferns, and stems to set up nest for laying. Incubation lasts between 12 and 15 days and the nestling period averaged 12.4 days. Both adults feed the young although only the female incubates and broods.

 The eggs are white to light aqua, with variable shades of brown blotching, with dimensions of about 18 and 23 mm (0.7 and 0.9 in).

AVIAN VIDEO 9/100 - Lesser Fish-eagle

The smaller Lesser fish-eagle perch high up a tree about 80 ft.I wondered it ispaired with a Grey-headed .  Just listen for its "crying" call. I also sighted a twigged nest on the same tree and I wonder it will be nesting time nearing April - May.....enjoy.
