Avian Species Split - Black-backed Swamphen
The black-backed swamphen (Porphyrio indicus) is a species of swamphen occurring
from southeast Asia to Sulawesi and Borneo. It used to be considered a
subspecies of the purple swamphen, which it resembles, but has a large red shield,
black upperparts, and the side of the head is blackish.
It is less common to see but I am not considering it a new lifer though.
The Black-backed in the darker form is now split. The foreground bird is a moorhen give the size comparison
The Purple Swamphen in comparison have paler head towards grey-headed.
