MikeBirder - Malaysian Birds

Hi

Welcome to my Malaysian Birding Blog. I migrated to blogspot.com as my blog at multiply.com closed shop in 2012. I wish to showcase all Malaysian birds that I have photographed whether here or overseas. My countdown of lifers started in 2005. Coming to Oct 2025 my countdown of lifers photograph has reached
584/688 species of birds of Malaysia in photos.

My shooting gear was a EF400mm f4 DO lens and Canon 7D body which to me is the ideal setup for mobility and bird chasing at that time. Eventhen the weight over my shoulder is more that 5.5 kg. As of June 2016 I have also acquired a Fuji XF 100-400mm OIS lens to complement my travelling cum birding trip overseas. My Fuji X-T2 went kaput recently and I upgraded to the X-T5 in 2023 ; the weight over my shoulder is much lighter now by 30%. In December 2018 I acquired the Nikon Coolpix P1000 as supplementary camera for distance shooting of 3000mm.
Fuji have finally made available their new XF 200-600mm lens which I yet to decide to spend another RM10,000. As for Fuji body I will stop with X-T5 36megapixel ..........

I am a weekend birder. Do feel free to drop me a line at mikebirding@gmail.com and I see whether you can tag along in my outings. My usual day trip is just an hour ride away to Hulu Langat, Lancang, Kemensah, Krau, Awana, Hulu Kali, Gombak Ole Road, Fraser's Hill , Bukit Tinggi and KSNP & Coastal Sg Janggut Jeram side of the coast . Overnite trip to Merapoh & Amp; Cameron, Air Hitam and further north to Kuala Sidim is a seldom affair but for lifer we travel. Panti in Johor is another good birding site that I yet to go. Then there are the Borneo birds of Sabah and Sarawak of Malaysia which I seriously much go to chalk up more lifers. This I did in 2018 to Sepilok Sandakan and Kinabalu Park. Next Danum and LahatDatu . In 2024 I visited a new happening birding spot inTalang Seremban.......

WARNING Birding is an addiction once you started its hard to stop. The wifey and children are now birding widow and orphan.

Wader Tern - Gull-billed Tern (Lifer 583/688)

Another good lifer from Morib. My Sifu Ang id it as the Gull-billed tern as happily chalk up another lifer for the year. Thought the waders are not that many at Morib but there were quality birds for me rather than the common ones. In the afternoon sun the heatwave cause blurred out photos as we were shooting from a distance of 150-200 feet.

The Gull-billed is rather slender and medium size of about 15 inches. Body is totally whitish from far and its head is white with a superficial black patch back of its eyes. Its bill is heavy and dark.

Sharma 3/3 - Rufous-tailed Sharma (Lifer 582/688)

At last  my final Sharma was found by my team in Endau Rompin. On entering the river trail I heard its call quite clearly but nothing in sight as the low light condition and heavy undergrowth was not helping. We played its call intermittently for a good stretch  of our walk but no respond and then an hour into our trail it was sighted sitting quietly on low tree branch as my gang managed to shot it abate behind foliage thru a small pocket opening. It was so blessed to encounter this rarity in my case after birding for 20 years.

Our encounter of this male  bird here was enlightening. It seldom call out and it would sit quietly on its own for long period until it is spook by people. The male bird has a rufous rump and tail with a broad black tip not as long as the White-rumped It looks a bit rounded rather than slender. It has this quarter white brow and its beak is thick shrike-like

This bird like swampy habitat in broadleave forest below 950m ASL. Panti will also be a good location to see this bird and record in Krau forest which never showed up since umpteen years visiting the place.

Pigeon 9/10 - Cinnamon-headed Green Pigeon (Lifer 581/688)

These pigeon are gregarious roosting in a pair  or a group of many. They like to hang out perch high on barren tree away from human. We found  many colony along route 63 / Muadzam-Rompin trunk road nearing Simpang Tiga Leban Chondong or the off road of Kanpung Lanjut to Kuala Rompin.

The name "Cinnamon headed" follows the color of the male bird in a distinct bright maroon with patchy pink & orange tones. The female is plain green like the thick-billed  and others species but with slight different in color array of their green tones. Their red beak is unique with broad white tip.

This is coastal bird mainly seen in Swampland, Bakau forest and Scrub land  along the east coast of Peninsula from Dungun Rompin Mersing right down to Johor Bahru. Usually if sighted near the road it is advisable to shoot from the car first before embarking from the blind side of the road as the birds are skittish and wary of approaching human. In our case the birds were 50m away from us unfortunately and we approach thru the fringe tree undergrowth and shrubs.

Next to find  the Large Green Pigeon in Melaka/Janda Baik...........

Swift-Swiftlet 8/12 - Germain's Swiftlet (Record 580/688)

I always thought this Swiftlet is a migrant bird but actually common resident There are several subspecies of this bird depending on the color texture of its rump and bottom body. The rump with paler gray whitish feathers with blackish shaft streaking is its main id. The wing line is very straight at its wing end primaries. Size wise its about 11-12cm is small amongst the other swiftlets names migrant Himalayan and Waterfall Swiftlet which I hope to see next

I was never good in BIF shooting This time with my buddies guiding me my I set my Fuji XT5  to all focus point and limited focusing distance to infinity ; then setting to at least 1/2000-4000 speed max multi frame speed  I manage some decent  handheld shots. Sometime I envy two buddies who were shooting with Nikon Z series where shooting BIF with ease.....Should I change system.

Its habitat is all terrain whether it is forest or agri land  towards open land like in Rompin over swamp flats and scrub land, sea isle upto 1300 asl.

Next target Swiftlet that I wish to see is the Waterfall Swift; Glossy Swiftlet with its bat like flight and the migrant Himalayan Swiftlet &Fork-tailed Swift

Babbler 19/23 - Scaly-crowned Babbler (New 579/688)

Actually I have shot this babbler before but lost my photo during migration to Blogspot umpteen years ago. This time we were lucky in our recent trip to Rompin forest reserve when a threesome came out to greet us in the middle storey as they responded to our callback.

It average 15cm in size which is smaller than its sibling Rufous-crowned coming in at 18cm/8 inches. Beside that the different between the two is the rufous crown of the Scaly has black speckle ; its breast is pale white without streak whilst the legs are pale  rather then black.

There are found on lowland broadleaves forest upto 800m feeding and playing at low to middle storey level. The Rufous is more often recorded sighted in lower lying (upto 400m asl) forest jungle.

Avian Sighting June2025 - Long-billed Spiderhunter

Its been awhile to see this rarity spiderhunter. I shot it in Fraser Hill

Babbler (18/23) - Grey-breasted Babbler Lifer 2025 (578/688)

Opportunity  came in July 2025  when news arrived by Johor birders that a family of Grey breasted babbler (post nesting) were regularly sighted in Panti at one of the many trails there. You definitely need a local birder to guide you to seek this rarity babbler. As far as I have been birding  for 20 years I only know Panti Johor as one site to see this bird in Península abate East Malaysia sighting like at Sabah Poring.

ID - It is a small to medium-sized bird of  12-15cm. It has Gray-breasted plumage as its name with distinct white throat and underparts. Bill is Slightly curved and slender, suitable for insectivorous diet. Eye color is Dark eyes, often appearing bold whote lore and black face. – Wing and tail: Shorter wings and a relatively long tail, which is often held downward. Typically found in pairs or small groups, often foraging in leaf litter or low shrubs in  dense undergrowth in humid forests or secondary growth areas. It produces a series of soft, melodious notes; listen for its distinctive vocalization.

This gray-breasted babbler species stays in the middle storey of virgin lowland forest especially swampy and flooded terrain. In peninsula Malaysia it is found in central Pahang which I always try to search is in Krau Lancang but so far no such sighting.

Like many other babblers they respond to your bird call  but this bird was a bit skittish in our encounter as there too many distraction from other birders also seeking the bird. It is known to mimic the calls of other bird species, which can sometimes confuse predators!
We got just a window of 20 second or so to shoot in the early morning lighting. My Fuji XT4 failed me as it was not focussing well enough in the low like condition. There were a family of 3 birds we saw during this  post nesting period in July. It's  mimic
unique hopping manner and perch on vertical stump branches like forest Wren babbler showcasing their agility and adaptability.
