Speckled Piculet

The Speckled Piculet is the other Malaysian's tiniest  Woodpecker of about 4-5 inches. This specimen with a rufous tinge to its forehead is the adult male. Its black spotted and barred breast & belly  is very striking. Usually it is seen in the highlands submontane forest of about 1500m; following birdwave in search of grubs and ants nest at lower storey shrubby densed undergrowth.

 

It is suppossedly a common bird to see but for me it has been elusive until recently in September 2012 Sighting are at Fraser's Hill, Ulu Kali Genting and Cameron Highland.

Rufous Piculet

There are 3 species of Piculet in SEA. The Speckled is the other found in Peninsula Malaysia whilst the White-browed which have same resemblance of RP except for the white brow which is found in northern part of SEA.

Piculet are miniature Woodpecker the size of flower peckers - 4 inches or 10cm. The Rufous Piculet likes bamboo and broadleaved forest upto 1500m or so. It peck on twiggy dead branches in the undergrowth for grub mostly ants, termites etc
