Guys you do not have to go to Fraser'sHill/
Cameron to see this bird. Tan Choo Eng TCE has found a gem of a place at Ulu
Kali Awana to see montane birds including this rather most wanted Cutia. I
dedicate my showing to him.
Cutia are distributed along the foothills of the Himalayas and into Myanmar, Indochina and Malaysia. There is now a separation of the subspecies into Himalayan/Nepalese & the Vietnamese. anyway it do not bothers me.
Cutia of Peninsula Malaysia is found in montane broad leave forest covered with mosses and epiphytes in which it forages for insects and their larvae, seeds and berries. From my photos it do feeds on ficus berries in the open as described by TCE
A member of the babbler family and related to Laughingthrushes?......... it has blue grey crown, a black mask and black barring on the flanks. The wings are black with blue-grey panels while the mantle and upper tail coverts are chestnut. The tail is blackish. The duller female, not shown here, has dark spots on the mantle.
Its habit of creeping along trunks and branches is reminiscence of a Nuthatch.
